There is also a report where he was involved in an earlier aircrash and injured on the 11th May 1944, flying out of Wigsley, Nottingham

"Ernest Wilmshurst was killed when the Short Stirling Mk.III bomber (LJ254), he was flying in crashed due to pilot error on a non-operational night exercise. Five crew members were killed and three were injured.
Those killed, in addition to Ernest, were pilot officer Robert Wyndham DUNN (pilot, 422460, RAAF), warrant officer Harold Eric HUGHES (navigator bomb aimer, 26382, RAAF), flight sergeant William Joseph LEA (navigator bomb aimer, 418963, RAAF) and flight sergeant Ronald Walter ELY (wireless air gunner, 26355, RAAF).
Those injured were sergeant E. J. WILD (flight engineer, RAF), flight sergeant Geoffrey Roy WHIMPEY (air gunner, 434299, RAAF) and flight sergeant George Edward DOWLING (air gunner, 429881, RAAF)."
